Since it is a cool season grass, it will stop growing in mid-May and/or when daytime temperatures reach the 80's, consistently. Wilt, heat and diseases will cause a rapid decline/death in the CA months beginning in late June through September.
Perennial Ryegrass grows 1 - 2ft as a pure strand but is often mixed with other fescue grasses, which may compete with its growth. Since it is a cool season grass, it will stop growing in mid-May. Several environmental factors, such as seedbed preparation, frequent fertilization, water management, disease control, sun/shade duration and foot traffic (people & pets) will ultimately determine its growth rate.
